Makho’s Village
I grew up in a small village, surrounded by dirt roads, open fields, and the warm hum of community life. For as long as I can remember, my grandfather was at the centre of my world.
He was a strong man, even though his sight wasn’t what it used to be. Most days, you’d find me playing football with my friends in the field near our house, my laughter echoing through the village. And just when I’d be completely lost in the game, I’d hear his voice calling my name: ‘Makho!’
There he’d be, standing at the door, hands cupped around his eyes like makeshift binoculars, trying to focus his vision. ‘Come help me with something,’ he’d say, and I’d drop everything to run back home. At the time, it felt like just another chore, just another way I had to pitch in. But looking back now, I see it differently. Those moments with my grandfather weren’t just about helping him see the world around him—they were about helping me see the world differently.
Growing up in Village
I grew up where the roads were dusty but the hearts were full. A place where laughter echoed louder than any hardship, and the rhythm of daily life was led by wisdom passed down around fires and front porches.
My grandfather was the centre of my world. Though his sight faded with age, his vision remained crystal clear, grounded in purpose, patience, and people. He taught me that leadership isn’t loud. It’s in the quiet gestures, the daily rituals, and the belief that even the smallest effort matters.
He’d call me, “Makho!” from our doorway, his hands shaped like binoculars, pretending to see clearer. I’d drop everything to help him, not knowing that those moments were shaping how I would one day see the world with empathy, resilience, and a sense of duty to others.
Growing up in the village wasn’t easy. But it was rich. Rich in lessons, in culture, and in purpose. It was here that I learned the value of showing up, standing together, and honouring where you come from because that’s how you build where you’re going.
